Roff Beman belongs to the University community. He was born here, here he did his work and here he died. His death, in the summer of 1940 deprived us of one of the finest talents among Chicago artists, and one who, possibly more than any other, reflects in his own work the color and atmosphere of the city in which he lived. His work is also a reflection of his time. It reflects perhaps, to the casual observer, the despondency of the thirties, but there is never despondency in the love of his subjects as shown in these paintings; in his search for what he termed “a silvery tone”; in the subtleties of his composition, nor in his love of the textures of forms and in opulent paint quality.

It is with the greatest pleasure that the Renaissance Society presents his first one-man exhibition.
