Fables of the sly fox and the rascally rabbit have been handed down in one permutation or another from Aesop to Rabelais and up through Looney Toons. The only thing that changes is the allegorical context. To what extent, if any, is contemporary Yugoslavia capable of being represented allegorically given that the reality of its socio-political affairs resembles a bad dream? Vuckovic’s rabbit protagonist dreams he is the subject of an allegory that is traumatically shattered by an all too successful Elmer Fudd. In an abrupt series of identifications and misidentifications it becomes impossible to distinguish between levels of reality inside and outside the fable. The result is an utterly dysfunctional allegory, which is perhaps the only way to truly craft an allegory of dysfunction.
