  Introduction by Anne Rorimer

This 1974 exhibition surveyed the contemporary condition of the venerable genre of still life. While the 44 artists featured in the exhibition technically adhered to the traditional subject matter of still life- food, flowers and drapery, etc.- their treatments of it ranged from the whimsical (Ellen Lanyon's cornucopia of creatures, titled Chinese Wonder Bowl) and surrealistic (Jan Miller's giant Still Life With Nectarines), to the symbolic (Joseph Bueys empty Felt Suit) and ironic (Andy Warhol's mass- produced Cambell's Soup).
